ADEC was established in 1991 as a non-profit
association, representing the interests of electronic component
distributors in South Africa. Similar organizations exist in Europe.
ADEC's prime objective is to contribute to
the creation of an environment which encourages a dynamic growth of
the electronic manufacturing industry, at both component and system
level, in South Africa. In 1997 ADEC expanded its membership base,
by merging with the Electronic Component Manufacturers Association (ECMA),
to form one comprehensive body known as ADEC. The merger created new
synergies and provides broader representation to the local
manufacturing customer base. ADEC was a founder member of the
Electronics Industry Federation (EIF), also formed in 1991.
ADEC is a member of the European based
International Distributors of Electronics Association (IDEA) whose
headquarters are in Milan, Italy. The Chairmen of ADEC have
participated at various IDEA meetings overseas in the past.
Today, ADEC has a membership of more than 30
companies, representing all the major component distributors, and
component manufacturers in South Africa.
Worldwide the electronics industry is an
enabling industry for the growth of a country's overall economy, and
it is no co-incidence that the most developed countries in the world
have a thriving electronics industry. Hence ADEC sees one of its key
aims as communicating this message to government and policy-making
bodies throughout South Africa, as there is a need for a more
focused and coherent policy for the electronics manufacturing
industry. To achieve this, ADEC has sponsored studies of various
sectors of the electronics industry and these findings have been
published in technical magazines during the past years.
ADEC interacts with the government and other
bodies, including the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and
the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), in regard to the
formulation of strategies, revisions to import duty tariffs, new
specifications, and other matters which would encourage the growth
of the electronics manufacturing industry in this country.
To train staff members in the various
companies, ADEC has involved itself in seminars and specialised
training programs with the objective of increasing the
professionalism in the distribution industry.
ADEC promotes and encourages ethical
business practices, well-trained and professional sales teams,
technical support and the availability of inventory to meet planned
customer requirements. Whilst representing the many common interests
of its members, ADEC encourages healthy competition between its
members, to the benefit of all our customers and the industry as a
whole.
As ADEC, we are now accurately tracking DMAS
numbers for the South African Electronics Market.
The ADEC committee is elected annually at
the AGM, and it is this committee that elects the Chairman for the
following year. |
